Earth Day - Hanuman!

Lao Tzu speaks of the progressions of degenerating governance. “A leader is best when people barely know that he exists, not so good when people obey and acclaim him, worst when they despise him. Fail to honor people and they fail to honor you. But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done and his aim is fulfilled, they will all say, we did this ourselves.”

Lao Tzu said it well as he said everything well, “Cut down on useless craving”. You’re only poor if you want shit you don’t need. The universe seems to be inclined to take care of everything else.

"By the time Obama leaves office, you will not be able to exchange dollars for any sound currency in the world without permission from the U.S. government. The price of gold will be well over $2,500 per ounce. Most importantly, commodities will no longer be priced in dollars either, but instead in the currencies of the leading producer. Americans haven't experienced anything like this since the Great Depression." – Porter Stansberry

Deaths from gunfire are under a hundred per year in all western countries according to Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine," except the US where they're over 11,000 (eleven thousand) per year.

Standing head and shoulders over all other communications for illustrative power is an Israeli government spokesman "When you have a Palestinian kid facing an Israeli tank, how do you explain that the tank is actually David and the kid is Goliath?"

"Swine Flu" has killed 149 people in Mexico and all schools have been closed. Infected people in the US appear to recover better. The virus is human to human transmitted, a combination of the H1N4 "Avian Flu" virus, and others, and may have the potential to create a pandemic (World wide epidemic.) There is no shortage of commentators suggesting it is a laboratory (not naturally occurring) created virus, to give the slaughter of the browns program a bit of a new boost. For details see http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N24524032.htm

According to a new book published in Jakarta, Indonesia, written by the Indonesian Minister of Health and endorsed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the US is trying to use bird flu samples to create a biological weapon.

The US government has ordered half a million air tight coffins, suitable for burying infectious plague victims.

The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration recently postponed its crucial program to rejuvenate quarter-century-old Trident missile warheads because no one can remember how to make a key component of the weapons (codenamed "Fogbank"), according to a March 2 report of the Government Accountability Office. The GAO found that, despite concern over the bombs' safety and reliability, NNSA could not replicate the manufacturing process because all knowledgeable personnel have left the agency and no written records were kept. Said one commentator, "This is like James Bond destroying his instructions as soon as he's read them." [Sunday Herald (Glasgow), 3-7-09]

The GAO report came two months after the German Interior Ministry reported to Parliament that over a 10-year period, it had lost 332 secret files that were in fact so secret that no one in the Ministry could recall what was in them. [The Local (Berlin), 12-13-08]

Appointed to a recent Japanese administration was a practicing Buddhist, who declined to sign any of the execution orders that fell under his Ministry of the Interior's control of the prisons and execution sector, refusing to order the death of another living being. An example of sticking to your guns, or sticking to your principles, or even to your principals. Result? No executions were carried out in Japan during his tenure of the office. All of us can do as much; no one can do more.

"Observe calmly; secure our position; cope with affairs calmly; hide our capacities and bide our time; be good at maintaining a low profile; and never claim leadership." Deng Xiao Ping, on Chinese international policy

Relaxation of money transfer and travel restrictions to Cuba - good start! Now, slowly, carefully, enter into closer dialogue with Cuba itself, visibly in a transitional period, the optimum window for negotiating relations both sides can rest content with. (The standard neocon approach "The government you have is not legitimate because we don't like it" was never workable for anyone except undisputed world dictator, and like the famous NSA declaration of US "Ownership of space" - i.e., the entire universe - really demonstrates very little except that the neocons are clearly not playing with a full deck.) The great prize you can dangle, though initially in the background, is handing the entire Guantanomo Bay territory back to Cuba,(Castro has never cashed any of the checks sent in payment of the lease negotiated with Batista, or whatever blood soaked dictator ran the place before Castro) and admitting the Batista era really is over, and the legitimate government of Cuba is the one it has. That's a heady prize to dangle, Hanuman, and the result would be even more beneficial to these United States than to Cuba.

How Dick Cheney managed to get control of all the country's levers of power without one solitary vote, except his own, having ever been cast for him, is a mystery future gerations will scratch their heads over, indeed many people were already scratching their heads over it even during his reign. (To view the rise of Mr. Cheney from "Dick Who?" to virtual emperorship see "Ruled by a dick" in April 2008 at http://wahyusamputra.blogspot.com/2008/04/ruled-by-dick_02.html)

The mainstream media's attitude is perhaps best typified by the story of Fox News and the Monsanto Growth Hormone. A team of reporters, Steve Wilson & Jane Akre, researched the effects of synthetic bovine growth hormone on cattle and discovered that a great deal of evidence exists that people who consume the meat or dairy products from treated cattle can suffer adverse health effects. Monsanto got wind of the story and together with dairy associations pressured Fox News to shut the story down. Fox News ordered the reporters to change the story, the reporters refused and Fox fired them. The reporters sued and LOST on appeal when the court ruled that since there is no law requiring the media to tell the truth about anything, the mainstream media is within their legal rights to fire reporters who refuse to lie! As a side note, that legal precedent is troubling when one realizes that our national elections are counted by a privately owned company, owned jointly by the TV networks (who are not bound by law to tell the truth) and not subject to either citizen or governmental oversight.

But we do want to have a good dig and find out what was going on, right? Followed by a flood of torture authorizations, torture reports (waterboarded 183 times in one month? Six times a day? Yes, but he did confess to masterminding the 911 attack, in addition to crucifying Jesus Christ with rusty nails, according to published reports. And perhaps to having sex with the Virgin Mary? For courage and humor Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has it all over Mr. Cheney's torturers.) and self incriminating statements from major actors, (so Dick Cheney was admittedly in charge of the WH assassination squad? An interesting conversation with Senator Wellstone perhaps requires some explanation. Well, if Avigdor Lieberman, the "kingmaker," cousin of our own Senator Lieberman of Connecticut, says "The Americans will do what we tell them," as he is reported to have done, then he must be responsible for his own remarks, right? No doubt people will continue to make unfortunate remarks.)

Well now if the wave of public revulsion reached a point where the president had no alternative to appointing some kind of commission or special prosecutor, (I know just the man for the job) and retreating rapidly from any further involvement, then that wouldn’t be his fault would it? Or anything to do with him, really, right? Hanuman!

Update for May 14, 2009:

The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) successfully applied under the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to have published a series of hundreds of new pictures of US military abuse of prisoners. Not even Dick Cheney can deny that the pictures exist. The only question is should they be published?

Having accepted the court’s decision in favor of the ACLU application, the Obama administration must consider the effect of publication, and at considerable personal risk to Obama’s promise of more open and accountable government, reluctantly decides that publication of hundreds of very graphic pictures of US military abuse of helpless prisoners would create a wave of anti-American sentiment that would increase the danger of attacks on the US military. Not even the leading right wing wackos wish to throw doubt on the existence of the pictures, fearing that such challenges risk publication to counter them.

He has it going and coming! Obama is forced, literally, to prevent publication of graphic scenes, left to every one’s imagination, of abuse admitted to have taken place, to protect the military. What else can he do? Hanuman!

He’s a real bonny fighter.

Update for May 27, 2009

Of the 140 villagers torn apart by high explosive, in the US air strike on Farah province, Bala Baluk district, western Afghanistan, on May 3, 2009, only 22 were male and over 18. 93 were children.

"British pilots in Afghanistan are firing an increasing number of "enhanced blast" thermobaric weapons, designed to kill everyone in buildings they strike, the UK Ministry of Defence has revealed. Since the start of this year more than 20 of the US-designed missiles, which have what is officially described as a "blast fragmentation warhead", have been fired by pilots of British planes."
The Guardian, Thursday May 28 2009 Richard Norton-Taylor

The standard final excuse “Terrorists are using children as human shields” rings somewhat hollow in light of the thermobaric weapons being used by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). If they are really trying to kill only the terrorists, and not their shields or hostages, why use these weapons, guaranteed to kill every living thing inside?

Meanwhile, Mr. Geithner has made his trip to Beijing, where the Chinese have shifted their support of US debt to the very short term debt, avoiding the longer term paper, no doubt to plead for more debt support, and was told to bugger off. So it goes.

The news of the bankruptcy of General Motors came on a day where the DOW went up another hundred points or so in its recent strong advance, and a few days after the Bilderberg decision that "the destruction of the US dollar must continue." Go figure.

And remember Maynard Keynes "The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent."

The little Luo

His origins verge on the mythological on his father’s side, from the same East Kenyan area as the “original Adam*,” identified by our new skills in mitochondrial DNA and other methods, See

http://wahyusamputra.blogspot.com/2008/04/poetry-archery-money-and-mitochondrial.html

as the progenitor of all humans currently living, distinguished by “very complex language skills,” and the invention of the bow and arrow technology, of which the Pate islanders, off the coast of Kenya, are still masterly practitioners. All his cousin strands died out.

(*Note: That Jefferson had the M168 mutation on the Y (the male) chromosome pins him down as one of the descendants of the "original Adam," an East African male sixty thousand years ago. Jefferson displays those characteristics quite dramatically that scientists on the Kenyan island of Pate and in the research centers of the US think they can distinguish, a jutting jaw, expansion of the rear skull, a very complex language system, and a capacity for invention that makes him "the first distinctively modern" human, later spreading from East Africa through Asia and Europe.)

Of the white side of his ancestry, his devotion to his white grandmother who brought him up, in Hawaii and Indonesia, we are all over-informed already, but it’s important never to forget this strand, since it is the foundation of his demonstrated skill at the white man’s areas of expertise.

What else is important?

He’s a Chicago politician, and in Chicago politics is transaction-based, not ideology-driven.

He has a distinguished academic career, as editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Strong as his western expertise is, he shows signs of loyalty to other systems, like the figure of Hanuman, the monkey god, that he carries with him.

He is unashamedly uxorious, “orang marem” as they say in Java, a man devoted to his wife.

He shows signs that creating a consensus, as practiced by the Quakers in America and the Javanese royal court in Yogya, central Java, is a long term effort.

His desire to create a US consensus has resulted in his recruiting his main opponents, such as Hillary Clinton and Robert Gates, Bush’s military head, into his administration.

(As Mao Tse Tung pointed out, one of the main problems in a revolution, in putting the proletariat in charge, is that a farmer or a fisherman really can not run a railway system; the only people who know how to do that are the ones doing it before, and they therefore stay in charge of it.)

Two important negatives – (1) He is not a military man, as many of his predecessors and rivals are.

(2) He is not slave descended, as many US blacks are.

Obama is a Luo, the minority tribe in Kikuyu-dominated Kenya. That some not so sweet memories of the British in Kenya remain seems likely, but more important is the ancient skill of pacifying and keeping reasonably fruitful relations with the majority tribe. If a Luo came to power, would you expect him to make enemies all round by prosecuting crimes by previous administrations, or leave all those awesome powers Bush exercised in place, - might come in useful – and indeed increase some of them?

Whether for this reason or others, the legal steps taken (and more important, not taken, some would say, like the refusal to pursue any possible crimes of the Bush administration) have all been well to the right of the previous administration:

“So clear is the continuity between the Bush and Obama administrations in this area that the Wall Street Journal published an editorial Friday, headlined, "Obama Channels Cheney," hailing the new administration's stand on warrantless wiretapping. "The Obama Justice Department has adopted a legal stance identical to, if not more aggressive than, the Bush version," the newspaper's right-wing editorial board gloated.”

“During the presidential campaign, candidate Obama joined with the Bush administration in opposing any serious executive pay restrictions in the original TARP bailout legislation. As president elect, he lobbied to block attempts to attach meaningful compensation limits in the congressional authorization for the second $350 billion installment of TARP funds. And his administration intervened in the final stages of congressional action on his economic stimulus bill to sanction bonuses at AIG and other firms receiving government cash by exempting bonuses agreed to before the February 11 enactment of the stimulus legislation from limits on executive compensation.”

March 21, 2009

The argument of the Obama supporters is that as the President brings the ship of state into a long sweeping turn, the engineers and technicians must continue to perform their old jobs, (Remember Mao Tse Tung) but as the actions of the Obama administration continue to outflank Bush on the right, a demonization has also occurred:

“When Will It Start? Part II Rixon Stewart – March 31, 2009

This website anticipates that the coming weeks will see events of historic significance; and like the assassination of President Kennedy or 9/11, what unfolds will open the way for much wider conflict.

Kennedy’s assassination led to Vietnam, 9/11 brought us the “War on Terror”, Iraq and Afghanistan. What happens in the following weeks will ultimately bring us another war more destructive than all of those wars put together.

Although it’s still uncertain precisely how it will start there are a number of possibilities. For example we might see an Israeli attack on Iran, which falls short of its aims only to provoke a fierce Iranian counter strike; thereby opening the way for U.S. military intervention.

Or we might see that old speciality: a false flag terror attack or even an assassination of a high level political player. However, we’ve seen so many false flags recently that what worked with 9/11 and 7/7 might be seem too obvious now. So this time round we may see something a little different, like an assassination.

Whatever happens though, in the aftermath expect the finger of blame to be pointed at Iran, thereby paving the way for a full U.S./NATO strike.

Obama’s recent gestures toward Iran are part of this ruse. So far he has produced nothing concrete and nor will he, while his military plan and prepare for a strike on Iran; Obama will continue with fine words and empty gestures, simply acting the role of the “good guy”.

As detailed elsewhere, preparations are well underway for combined military strikes but they won’t remain limited to Iran. Because it’s likely to escalate into something much bigger with Pakistan and Syria coming alongside Iran together with Russia and eventually China too.

Yet whatever happens and however unexpected it may seem, it’s been long in the making. Indeed some months ago a psychic friend noted that China was making extensive preparations for war. Just as we reported, that western military commanders met secretly in New York State late last year; possibly to hammer out a coordinated military response to whatever unfolds in the coming weeks.

No actual resemblance but you get the idea

Nonetheless whatever transpires is only the opening act in a much bigger drama that has long been prepared for.

One might even call it a cosmic drama. Because waiting in the wings, ready to step-up and take command, as all hell breaks loose, is a figure long foretold by ancient prophets.

Christian esoteric researcher Rudolf Steiner and the ancient Zoroastrians knew him as Ahriman. While Muslims refer to him as ‘Al-Masih ad-Dajjal’, the great deceiver. Whatever he is called though he is an incarnation in human form of a powerful entity more commonly known today as Satan.

And here it should be noted that he is quite distinct from Lucifer, an entirely different entity who, according to Steiner, incarnated in ancient China nearly four thousand years ago.

Both are actively opposed to human spiritual evolution as it diminishes their power. Quite simply, Ahriman and Lucifer are empowered by men’s weaknesses and ignorance. So that by developing spiritually mankind effectively enfeebles both.

Which is why they are working against humanity’s spiritual evolution.

Steiner taught that the incarnations of Lucifer and Ahriman, together with Christ’s, are interlinked and part of a series of manifestations that are essential for mankind’s higher evolution.

Lucifer, as words derived from his name suggest, seeks to distract man from his higher destiny with illusion and delusion: as illustrated by Hollywood and much of the “new age”.

While Ahriman wants to deny man’s spiritual ascent by embedding him firmly in the material realm – as embodied in fractional reserve banking and scientific materialism – as if there were no higher spiritual reality.

However to counter balance these two opposing forces man requires the qualities exemplified by Jesus Christ, and what Steiner referred to as the “Christ force”.

Ahriman's head sculpted by Steiner

So Ahriman’s appearance is the final part of “coming of age” lesson for humanity.

And like they say, the most important lessons are often the most difficult. Just as when you were a kid you had to stand up to bigger kids in the playground who thought he could push you around.

What you learned then was more than just how to use your fists. You learned how to take command of yourself, to see things through and not to be cowed by appearance.

Well, this is no different. We, as individuals, must now summon all our reserves of courage, insight and compassion to face what is to come.

How many will succumb to this entity depends on each individual’s own inner qualities. Unsurprisingly though, with a few notable exceptions including Ahmadinejad, most of our political leaders are already in his thrall.

Make no mistake however. This writer is not just speculating because the figure referred to is already in the public arena, being prepared for higher elevation in the world of politics.

Although I won’t name him just yet, he is located in North America. Precisely where and when spiritual researcher and teacher Rudolf Steiner said he would incarnate.

Moreover, the current financial crisis has been created to catapult him into the public’s awareness as some kind of “saviour”. Although he will be anything but as will soon become apparent.

In fact a gifted psychic friend has reached the same conclusion about him and quite independently too.

All we can say is watch the financial world and wait for an apparent market ‘recovery’, then look out for whoever is credited with performing this economic “miracle”.

As the prospect of war looms watch for whoever is being hailed for rescuing us from “market meltdown”. The market’s recovery will only be temporary but it will be enough to elevate this character into the highest levels of the political firmament.
From here he will be able to guide and direct the coming war.

These are truly momentous times. We are at the beginning of a new age and as the old one passes away expect to see the beginning of the end of “scientific materialism”. For the notion that existence is confined to the physical world and that there is nothing beyond is about to end along with hundreds of millions, maybe even billions of lives.

This realisation will be a difficult one for many. Especially for those who’ve spent their lives working for their material welfare and nothing else.

It will be particularly difficult for those who have elevated pure logic and reason above compassion. For those who regard scientific materialism as their god, to the exclusion of all genuine spirituality, will soon see him in person: presiding over a maelstrom of unprecedented suffering.

It may give them second thoughts but he is coming; along with a firestorm of blood and crap the like of which humanity has never seen.”

Candidate Obama already made clear that increasing the number of countries to be attacked by one (Pakistan, previously an ally) was one of his priorities and increasing military spending was another, and so some of these moves should come as no surprise. Not allowing the right wingers, Bush cronies, and assorted neocons easily to paint him as a “wet,” as Mrs. Thatcher used to say, i.e., a limp left winger without the guts and iron to defend America, becomes an important area to keep a wary eye on, however, in view of his lack of military experience (He’s a Chicago community organizer, for God’s sake, arguably precisely what America needs most at the moment, not another of your dreary parade of ex-military “experts.”) and the softer side of some of his programs. Confrontation and aggression are not the only modes of combat, however, as a man carrying Hanuman in his pocket knows all too well. Speed and numbers are usually the key ingredients.

In memoriam

(Background track –James Taylor, You’ve got a friend)

Mahmoud Darwish
Jean Genet
Faris Glubb
George Habbash
Kurt Vonnegut

Mahmoud Darwish – top Palestinian poet

Jean Genet – Pronounced “A saint of existentialism” by Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and the rest of the existentialist ruling authorities around the late 1940s on the publication of “Our Lady of the Flowers,” an account of his life in prison and the imaginary lovers who entertained him there. “To ask why I am homosexual is like asking why my eyes are green,” he said. Served for many years in the French Foreign Legion, mostly in Syria, an unswerving supporter of the Palestinians.

Faris Glubb – son of Glubb Pasha who created and commanded the Jordanian Desert Legion

George Habbash – (“The conscience of Palestine”) a medical doctor in Amman, Jordan in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s who came to prominence when he searched all Amman for months for a winter coat made in the Arab world and failed to find one.

He decided to abandon family life and devote himself to doing something for the Arabs, particularly the Palestinians, and founded the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) – not to be confused with the PFLP GC (General Command) of Ahmed Gibreel – as commander of which he pulled off the first and most spectacular hijacking of aircraft, bringing two full western passenger planes down into the empty desert outside Amman, a location called “Dawson’s Field” or “Revolution Airport” depending on which side you were on.

(Leila Khaled took part in a hijacking around the same time “Slowhand” put out “Leila and other love songs” by Derek and the Dominoes. Serendipity.

No one said that the sword of God (the literal translation of the title Saif’Ullah) had to be a visible one. Ask Bear Stearns. Several billion of the world’s finest hedge fund securities – here, try a nibble, they’re delicious – POUF! A pile of dust and a forlorn moth fluttering out.)

Holding the passengers and the two planes in the desert went on for some time, the hijackers offer to blow up both planes if a rescue attempt was made being entirely successful. Everyone ran around screaming and waving their arms for weeks. The UN, the Pope, and all western governments became involved in relief supplies to the passengers, including a consignment of chemical toilets flown in from Switzerland.

A poem of the time hidden so successfully I can’t find a copy now, went, at least the bits I can remember:

“They’re flying in the toilets,
Yes I heard it on the news,
(And special toilet paper
In different shades of blues?)

The Pope has cast his arms abroad
For agony and loss
For those who fly in airplanes
Go in shadow of the cross

And the UN has not failed
To condemn the rule of might
For dad a dad a dad a dad a
Dad a something if you’re white.”

Any way, (sorry I can’t remember all of it!) the hijackers eventually put their hostages into a number of lorries, or trucks, and took them to Amman Airport. According to the street, the hijackers stood around the captives in the truck to protect them against any gunfire there might be, delivered them safely, went back and blew up the planes, and disappeared into the woodwork.

What it established was not only the use of hijacking (none of the hundreds of passengers suffered so much as a scratch) but in the minds of the locals, the real peculiarities of whites. Not only Bedouins, but anyone caught short in the desert, will soon do their business and scrub their butt with sand if they have two brain cells to rub together. (They’re flying in chemical toilets from Switzerland??????????)

Whether it came from some communist roots in his past, or was a personal conviction, George Habbash maintained an old style Soviet dislike of religion as the opiate of the masses, and that made most Arabs turn rather to Yasser Arafat for leadership. This kept the PFLP out of the circle of the leaders and gave it freedom of maneuver.

Kurt Vonnegut – Aaagh! Kurt Vonnegut! Slaughterhouse Five. Aagh. “Who will worry about the stupid people now? Raise your glasses, please...”

So it goes.

Pakistan “No” to US

http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/dawn-content-library/dawn/news/pakistan/us-to-respect-pakistans-sovereignty-qureshi-ha

US officials in Pakistan

Holbrooke, Mullen urge steps to eliminate safe havens ISLAMABAD: Pakistan rejected on Tuesday a US proposal for joint operations in the tribal areas against terrorism and militancy, as differences of opinion between the two countries over various aspects of the war on terror came out into the open for the first time.

Highly-informed sources said the move followed a collective decision reached between the government and security establishment to adopt a tough posture against a barrage of attacks and criticism emanating in recent weeks from Washington, directly targeting the Pakistan army and the ISI and creating doubts about their sincerity in the war on terror and the fight against Al Qaeda and Taliban.

Two top US officials, presidential envoy for the region Richard Holbrooke and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, had come to Islamabad with the idea of doing some tough talking and pressuring both the political and the military leadership to step up their efforts in the war on terror.

Instead, what they got was a barrage of criticism of the American position and the allegations constantly levelled against Islamabad about either protecting some Taliban elements or not doing enough to eliminate what the United States believes are the main elements carrying out attacks on Nato forces in Afghanistan.

According to a source in the US delegation, the stance taken by the Pakistani side came as a rude shock to the Americans, who had so far been taking the civilian and military leadership for granted.

Pakistani sources said the proposal for joint operations in the tribal areas was floated by Mr Holbrooke and Admiral Mullen during a series of meetings with the civilian and military leadership.

The sources said the US officials were also told that continuing drone attacks inside Pakistan’s territory were counter-productive and they were asked to shift the drone technology and authority to the Pakistan Army.

The sources said that army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, during his meeting with Mr Holbrooke and Admiral Mullen, also took a tough stance over drone attacks. He voiced serious concern over the tirade of allegations against Inter-Services Intelligence levelled by US generals and said that linking the ISI with the Taliban was inappropriate.

The army chief, the sources said, expressed Pakistan’s concerns without mincing his words. The US officials were told that it would be difficult to bridge the trust deficit if statements maligning the ISI kept coming from the United States, ignoring the contributions of the Pakistan army and ISI in the war on terror.

The sources also said that the ISI chief, Gen Asif Shuja Pasha, declined to separately meet the US officials, obviously because of the campaign launched against the premier intelligence agency, but perhaps citing other engagements. It was a clear expression of his annoyance over the well-organised campaign by a section in the US administration to single out the ISI for its criticism.

However, in a late-night statement, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations, Lt-Gen Athar Abbas, said that the ISI chief was present at the army chief’s meeting with the US officials.

Although Mr Holbrooke tried to downplay the ISI issue during a chat with a select group of reporters by saying that neither he nor Admiral Mullen had levelled any allegation against the agency, the admiral interrupted him and came out with a different point of view saying that there were challenges associated with the ISI.
He alleged that there was support for ‘some organisations’. He said the intelligence agencies in Pakistan and Afghanistan had played a role in the past. He said that ‘both the countries have a common enemy at the border now but the legacy remains’.

The US officials said they were trying to encourage cooperation between intelligence agencies of the two countries.

Admiral Mullen termed the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud a threat to the United States and said he facilitated attacks inside Afghanistan and posed a threat to the Nato forces which included US troops.

In reply to a question, Mr Holbrooke alleged the bulk of Taliban leadership was in Pakistan, and not in Afghanistan. ‘Any day they may be in Karachi, Miramshah or some other city.’ He said both Pakistan and the US had a common enemy, threat and challenge. Mr Holbrooke said the attack on Mumbai had been carried out by ‘strategic terrorists’ who wanted to damage relationship between India and Pakistan and their goal was to ignite a war between the two countries. He underlined the need for both countries to work together.

He evaded a question about the Kashmir dispute and just said that the United States would not mediate between India and Pakistan.

At the joint press conference with Mr Holbrooke, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, quite in contrast with his usual diplomatic, effusive and soft-spoken demeanour, was quite firm and categorical in mentioning Pakistan’s reservations with regard to the way the US was handling its ally in the war on terror and its anti-Pakistan campaign.

The disagreements between the two sides pertained largely to the drone strikes in Pakistani territory and the vilification campaign against the ISI. ‘While there are some positive elements and we recognise and appreciate them, there are certain red lines,’ Mr Qureshi said in a passionate tone, adding that those ‘red lines’ were discussed and he would take them up at a subsequent US-Pakistan-Afghanistan trilateral interaction planned for next month in Washington.

Mr Qureshi said: ‘We did talk about drones and let me be very frank: there is a gap between us and them.’

He attributed this divergence to the trust deficit between the two allies and said: ‘The bottom line is the question of trust.’

It was clear from the foreign minister’s words that there was a fundamental shift in the way Islamabad now wanted to deal with Washington. ‘The terms of engagement are very clear… We will engage with mutual trust and mutual respect in view and that is the bottom line.’

Mr Qureshi’s message perhaps could not have been more unequivocal; he stated that cooperation could continue only if balance and respect were restored to the relationship.

‘We can only work together if we respect each other and trust each other. There is no other way and nothing else will work,’ he said rather bluntly.

Reacting to President Barack Obama’s assertion that there would be ‘no blank cheques for Pakistan”, the foreign minister said: “We neither accept nor give one.’

Mr Qureshi also said that Pakistan’s expectations from its friends were not just monetary. ‘We have certain expectations from the Friends of Democratic Pakistan. Most importantly, these expectations are not cents and dollars; rather it is the political support that Pakistan expects from them.’

Ambassador Holbrooke downplayed Mr Qureshi’s outburst by saying that the US was already addressing these issues through negotiations and would continue the approach in days to come. ‘In line with Foreign Minister Qureshi’s suggestions, we hosted the first Pakistan-Afghanistan-US trilateral meeting in Washington. We also went to The Hague… We will go to Tokyo, the second round of trilateral conference in Washington on May 6 and 7. This is the pattern that will continue.’

Admiral Mullen reiterated that the US commitment to Pakistan was for a long term and would lead to ‘a surplus of trust’.

Mr Holbrooke and Admiral Mullen, who came to Pakistan together for the first time, also held meetings with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif. On Monday night, they had held a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari.

Wahyusamputra writes Untangling the Threads:

1. The CIA have established a numerous and very fruitful network of informants in the UK Pakistani community, to which the UK security bodies wish to retain access. Threats to discontinue intelligence sharing are usually enough to make the UK keep quiet about anything the US wants kept quiet, such as Binyam Mohammed.

2. India's permanent refusal to hold a plebiscite to let the inhabitants of Kashmir decide their own status, as demanded by the UN, since India has no chance of winning the referendum, is strongly supported by Israel, and by the US, which may not in the final analysis bode well for India. The US is quite clear that India must be supported, and Pakistan, promoted from chief ally to chief target, must be attacked.

3. Enormous volumes of obfuscation are necessary to obscure the fact that no country wishes to be invaded and occupied, or to have its population the target of missile strikes. Gordon Brown's blockade of the Gaza coastline to help the Israelis keep the fish in the barrel is a clear indication of current loyalties.

Obama's current kill rate #4

Where is the horse?
Where is the rider?
Where is the horn that was blown?

They have passed like rain on the mountain.

Note to ockr #4 -

“We don’t use horses any more.” “No, but the people you’re slaughtering do.”

This is part of a “Slaughtering the browns in an overpopulated world” program that has been running for many years, best illustrated perhaps by the US general mystified by the continuing furore over Abu Ghraib: “But they’re only Iraqis!” (See “Tight packing for the Middle Passage” in February 2008, at

http://wahyusamputra.blogspot.com/2008/02/tight-packing-for-middle-passage.html

No doubt the US general who said that is included in Obama’s effort to create a real all inclusive U.S. consensus, and probably still carrying out his previous duties.

Mr. Obama has demonstrated that a black man can, effortlessly, and in his sleep, do all those things we'd been given to understand could only be done by white men, on account of their immense superiority in intellect and experience, and that in and by itself is an immense achievement. Nothing will ever be the same with that much superiority without raising a sweat has been demonstrated.

One can only hope that in his careful efforts to bring the ship of state into a long sweeping turn Mr. Obama can and will moderate the "trail of tears and blood," the white man's preferred operating mode. And we don't have an awful lot of time.

P.S. Don't get trapped in AfPak (aka "Obama's Vietnam.")

The Lotus Sutra

The central message of Buddhism can be found in the Buddha’s answer to the question “What is good?” – “Whatever is useful.”

Devotees of the Lotus Sutra may use any methods, overt or covert, to fend off attacks on their manifest destiny “to enjoy themselves at ease.” It may be regarded as a duty, indeed, to do so.

***********

President Ikeda's Guidance for Apr 2
Why are human beings born? This question has posed a great challenge. President Toda lucidly set forward his conclusion. Namely, that this world is a place for people to, as the Lotus Sutra states, "enjoy themselves at ease." We were born here in order to thoroughly savor the joys of life. Faith in the Daishonin's Buddhism is what enables us to bring forth the great life force we need to lead such an existence.

Events: 1958 Josei Toda, the Soka Gakkais second president, dies.
